The multi-generational Respectful Exits campaign is engaging all aging workers to transform the trajectory of work and retirement in a way that will ultimately serve individuals of all ages. Our leaders are both advocates who exemplify the experience, vigor, and determination of those working beyond the sell-by date, as well as younger champions who see it as a looming danger. They all bring a wealth of experience to this effort.
Paul Rupert, Chief Executive Officer. Paul has forty-five years of nonprofit management and consulting experience. He founded and managed innovative nonprofits in healthcare, legal services, mediation, publishing and advocacy campaigns. He played a pivotal role in promoting the practice of flexible scheduling and staffing throughout the economy. His firm Rupert Organizational Design (formerly Rupert & Company) has consulted to more than a hundred companies implementing creative flexible staffing and scheduling initiatives. His firm currently leads in the development of flexible and phased retirement programs.
Janice Gallick, Chief Operating Officer. Janice spent two decades in major advertising and marketing firms. She has played leading operational, business development, marketing and communications roles in these organizations and a tech start-up. Janice co-founded, managed and led marketing of CareCircle programs, software to enable coordination of care for elders and others needing sustained support. She led partner management at AmericanTowns.com, a national network of 30,000 local community websites. She served as VP Communications at Colitis Foundation of America, and a leader in the Promotion Marketing Association.
Carol Evans, Chief Relationship Officer. Carol has built major publishing enterprises for four decades. She led the original Working Mother magazine, became President of Stagebill and returned to develop Working Mother magazine into the leading conferencing and corporate standard-setter in the work-life field. She has deployed her strong marketing, speaking and writing skills on national and global platforms. As CEO, thought leader and strategist, she has long focused on the need and potential for change in corporate policy and practice to support employees over the lifecycle.
Kate Sweeney, VP Development. For more than a decade Kate developed and led Cosmetic Executive Women’s Cancer and Careers project. This robust web-based and direct service program helped 350,000 employees a year with cancer integrate ongoing treatment with continued work. Cancer and Careers also engaged hundreds of employers in modifying their policies and practices toward those diagnosed with cancer. Through this and her pioneering work in media start-ups Sidewalk and Oxygen, Kate refined strong fundraising, program development and social media expertise.
Emma Plumb, VP Communications. Emma was the founding Director of 1 Million for Work Flexibility, the first national initiative creating a collective voice in support of flexible work. She writes widely on issues of work/life integration and workplace productivity, and her expertise has been featured in outlets including U.S. News, Forbes, and the Christian Science Monitor. Previously she worked in communications as the web producer for George Soros’ Open Society Foundations, as well as with the Bermuda Ministry of Education to coordinate a Stanford-designed computer science curriculum.
Nancy Rock, VP Local Initiatives. Nancy combines a twenty-year career in advertising and marketing with a range of innovative nonprofit advocacy projects and campaigns in San Francisco for the last two decades. She has strong strategy development, campaign management, fundraising, and communication skills developed in multiple domains. Her unique experiences in the women’s, gender equity, homeless, and domestic abuse fields give her a strong familiarity with and roots in the business, community, and political constituencies essential for success in a local initiative.
Michael Nolan, Partnerships. Michael brings five decades of national and local media, publications, nonprofit marketing and communications experience to the project. From early work producing documentaries for PBS through an impressive roster of San Francisco Bay Area clients and work on numerous neighborhood and city- and state-wide political campaigns, Michael has provided strategic, media and fundraising counsel. He maintains wide and strong relationships with business, nonprofit, political, journalistic and religious leaders and excels in the use of social and traditional media.
Kathleen Christensen, Advisory Board Chair. Kathleen combines decades of seminal research, advocacy and philanthropy in service of innovative flexible and older worker programs. As Working Longer Program Director at the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, she has funded innovative research and programs in support of older workers. Her earlier academic research and publications on work-from-home, along with years of creative funding, strengthened workplace flexibility and family-friendly business practices. She is Board Chairperson of Open Work, a best practices platform for companies reinventing where, when and how work gets done
